The T-34, a Soviet medium tank from 1940, was deployed by the Red Army in World War II against Operation Barbarossa. Its 76.2 mm gun surpassed contemporaries, and 60-degree sloped armour offered good anti-tank protection. The Christie suspension came from J. Walter Christie's M1928 design, versions of which were sold turret-less to the Red Army as "farm tractors" after being rejected by the U.S. Army. The T-34 had a profound and lasting impact on Eastern Front conflict, with German generals praising its superiority. Alfred Jodl noted the surprise of encountering this "wunder-armament" against German divisions, though its armour and armament were eventually surpassed.
